History
San Bernardino is named after a unique arrowhead formation that appears on the mountainside. Native American legend claims that a spirit of heaven burnt the arrowhead in order to guide tribes towards a climate with curative waters far away in California.
Mormon pioneers settled the area in 1851 and helped transform it into a major regional hub. When Church President Brigham Young called them back to Salt Lake City the industrious communities faded.
In the decades that followed, the California Southern Railroad was built through San Bernadino. This led to a population boom. Then Norton Air Force Base opened during World War II, eventually becoming San Bernardino International Airport. But in the late 1980s, when the economy soured and Kaiser Steel closed, civic pride took a hit.
